During the digital disruption of the 1990s, as post-workerist theorists have argued, classical ‘material’ labour was being supplemented by ‘immaterial’ or ‘virtuoso’ cognitive labour. During this period, labour also turned into a performative activity. However, today, immaterial labour is being automated as well, giving rise to an automated performance of labour. Statistical renderings are automated performances of data, a sort of stochastic ballet méchanique of pixels and features in latent space. Probabilistic systems are now assuming the role of post-Fordist virtuosos that are supposed to be creatively on fire 24/7.
